On Someone Else's Property

When a property owner let a hazard sit, or failed to provide the security a location plainly needed.

At Work

On-the-job injuries often involve a contractor, equipment maker, or property owner separate from your employer.

Involved in this type of accident?

Ambulance responding to an emergency

Medical Negligence

Care that fell below the accepted standard. These claims carry their own procedural rules and expert requirements.

Involved in this type of accident?

Person reviewing paperwork about a defective product claim

Dangerous Product

Claims against manufacturers and sellers whose product injured the person using it as intended.

Catastrophic Injuries & Fatal Cases

Injuries that permanently change a life, and claims brought by families after a death.

What to do after an accident

What you do in the hours and days after an accident can significantly affect your case. Follow these steps to protect your health and your rights.

Get medical care even if you feel okay

Head, neck, and back injuries often surface days later. A gap between the accident and your first medical visit is the first thing an insurer will use against you.

→

Photograph everything at the scene

The scene, the vehicles, the hazard, your visible injuries. Vehicles get repaired and spills get mopped; your photographs may end up being the only record.

→

Report it and get the report number

A police report for a crash, an incident report for a fall on business property. Ask for a copy or the report number before you leave.

→

Be careful with the insurance company

You are not required to give the other side's adjuster a recorded statement, and early offers usually arrive before anyone knows what your treatment will cost.

→

Keep everything in one place

Bills, discharge paperwork, mileage to appointments, missed workdays, and a short weekly note on what you couldn't do.

→

Stay off social media about it

Insurers look. A photo that seems harmless can be presented as proof you were not badly hurt.

Why Choose Us

When you choose Tarro Law Associates, you gain a team that combines legal excellence with genuine commitment to your wellbeing.

Proven Experience

More than 35 years of combined experience and over 1,000 case representations for injured people and families across Rhode Island.

Mission-Focused

Our injury practice is built around one goal: helping injured people and families. Every decision is driven by what is best for you, not what is easiest for us.

Compassionate Counsel

Behind every case is a person whose life has changed. We treat every client as an individual — not a case number — and we care about your full recovery.

Trial-Ready Always

We prepare cases as though they are going to trial. That preparation strengthens our position at the negotiating table, and we are ready if a case needs a courtroom.

Fully Transparent

No hidden fees, no confusing agreements. We explain our fee structure, strategy, and your options so you can make informed decisions at every step.

24 / 7 Available

Accidents don't happen on a schedule. Our team is reachable around the clock and moves quickly to preserve evidence and protect your rights from day one.

What happens after you call a personal injury lawyer

From the moment you reach out to the moment your case resolves, here is how we work — and what you can expect from our team.

0102030405

01

We review your case.

As soon as you reach out, we schedule an immediate consultation — at no cost to you. We listen carefully to what happened and ask the questions we need to understand your situation. We give you our honest assessment and tell you what we think your options are. No pressure. No obligation.

02

We investigate while the evidence still exists.

Personal injury cases depend on evidence — and evidence disappears fast. Skid marks fade. Surveillance footage gets recorded over. Witness memories become unreliable. We move quickly to preserve what exists and gather what we need: accident reports, medical records, expert analysis, and more.

03

You focus on treatment; we build the value of the claim.

The most important thing right now is that you get the treatment you need. As you recover, we document every impact: physical, emotional, financial. A claim cannot be valued accurately until your medical picture is clear.

04

We demand, negotiate, and file if we have to.

When the time is right, we submit a documented demand to the responsible insurance company and negotiate. Many cases resolve at this stage. If the insurer will not make a fair offer, we are prepared to file suit.

05

The case resolves and, if we win, you are paid.

If there is a recovery, our fee comes out of it — and if there is no recovery, no attorney's fee is owed. We review every line item of the settlement with you before anything is signed. No outcome is ever guaranteed.

Step 1 is free — and there is no obligation.

What a personal injury claim can cover

Not every category applies to every case. We look at everything you have lost and pursue each category the evidence supports.

Medical expenses covered?

From emergency room bills to long-term rehabilitation, we document what you have spent — and what you will need — because of someone else's negligence, and pursue it in your claim.

  • Emergency medical bills

  • Surgery & specialist fees

  • Rehabilitation & physical therapy

  • Prescription medications

  • In-home care needs

  • Ongoing future medical costs

Lost income and wages?

When an injury keeps you out of work, the financial damage compounds fast. We document lost income — past and future — and pursue it in your claim.

  • Lost wages during recovery

  • Lost earning capacity

  • Benefits you could not earn

  • Reduced future income potential

Lost a family member?

Wrongful death claims allow surviving family members to seek compensation for both the financial and emotional losses caused by someone else's negligence.

  • Funeral & burial expenses

  • Loss of financial support

  • Loss of companionship

  • Grief & emotional suffering

  • Medical expenses before death

Damages that may be recoverable include:

  • Emergency medical bills

  • Surgery & specialist fees

  • Rehabilitation costs

  • Future medical expenses

  • Lost wages

  • Lost earning capacity

  • Pain & suffering

  • Emotional distress

  • Property damage

  • In-home care

  • Loss of companionship

  • Wrongful death damages

Personal injury questions we hear first

What is my case worth?

Anyone who gives you a number on a first phone call is guessing. Value depends on the severity and permanence of the injury, the total of your medical bills and lost income, how clear fault is, and — very often the real ceiling — how much insurance coverage exists.

A claim also cannot be valued properly until your treatment has stabilized, because future care and permanent limitation are usually the largest components.

How long does a personal injury case take to resolve?

A straightforward claim with clear fault and completed treatment can resolve in several months. A serious injury requiring long-term care, or a case where the insurer disputes fault, can take a year or more — and longer if suit is filed.

The largest single factor is your own medical recovery, because settling before the picture is clear means settling for less than the case is worth.

The accident was partially my fault. Can I still make a claim?

In Rhode Island, yes. The state follows pure comparative negligence: your recovery is reduced by your share of the fault, but it is not eliminated — even a person found mostly at fault can still recover the remainder. That is more favorable than many states; Florida, for example, bars recovery entirely above 50% fault.

Insurers also routinely assign more blame than the facts support. Do not accept their assessment as settled.

Will my case go to trial?

Many injury cases settle without a trial. That said, cases prepared as though they will be tried tend to settle for more — an insurer's offer reflects what it thinks would happen in a courtroom. No outcome can be promised.

The decision to accept a settlement or proceed is always yours. We give you our recommendation and the reasoning; you make the call.

I was hurt at work, but that is not a personal injury — that is workers comp, right?

Workers' compensation covers your medical care and a portion of lost wages regardless of fault, but it does not pay for pain and suffering and it usually cannot be brought against your employer beyond that system.

Many workplace injuries also involve a third party — a subcontractor, an equipment manufacturer, a negligent driver, a property owner. A claim against that third party can proceed alongside the comp claim.

My family member died. Who is authorized to bring the claim?

In Rhode Island, a wrongful death claim is brought by the executor or administrator of the estate on behalf of the surviving spouse, children, or next of kin, as set by statute. Rhode Island law also sets a statutory minimum recovery in wrongful death cases.

These claims carry their own three-year deadline and usually require opening an estate first. It is worth calling early rather than sorting the paperwork alone.
